Found on many race cars, especially in Japan, Advan is a popular choice for many when it comes to lightweight wheels.
In this post, I’m going to cover Advan Racing wheels, why they are popular and what makes them so good.
The History Of Advan Racing
Advan Racing is owned by Yokohama Tire, and is the flagship brand for Yokohama.
Yokohama has been around for over 100 years now and have been actively involved in motorsports for a long time, particularly in Japan.
Due to supplying tires for motorsport, they realised they could also make wheels to go with those tires, and in 1974 Advan Racing was born.
While in most markets outside of Japan the wheels are sold under the Advan brand name, the wheels in Japan actually go under “Yokohama Wheel”, and Advan is also used as a brand for some of the tires. It sounds kind of confusing, and to be honest it is.
Due to the backing that Advan Racing had from Yokohama, they quickly began to take off, and most motorsport teams that were using Yokohama tires began to run the Advan wheels as well, allowing them to quickly make a name for themselves.
This backing also allowed them to play around with wheels and do whatever they wanted, which resulted in them making a huge range of wheels that include cast, flow formed and forged designs.
Advan have a lot of technology for their wheel production similar to Rays Engineering, and in fact have even partnered with Rays Engineering to make some of their forged wheels.
The interesting thing about Advan is that they don’t differentiate between motorsport and wheels they sell the public, like some companies do.
All the Advan Racing wheels you see being used on the track by professional race teams are the same wheels you can buy for your own car.
They specialize in making lightweight racing wheels designed to clear big brakes and offer high performance.
How Advan Racing Rims Are Made
Advan Racing using cast, flow forming and forging to make their wheels, depending on the model. This means they offer wheels at a wide range of prices, with some wheels as low as around $370 and some as high as $1200 per wheel.
Cast
Advan Racing have made a number of cast wheels over the years. They used a special hollow-core casting technology which allowed them to make hollow spokes on some designs in order to reduce weight while keeping strength, depending on the design.
M.A.T. Flow Formed
Advan Racing use a flow forming technique similar to that used on Enkei wheels. This is a two stage process where the center of the wheel is cast, and then the barrel is made using heat and metal rollers to apply pressure while the wheel is spun.
The result of this is a lighter and stronger wheel than a regular cast wheel, while still being relatively low cost. These are very popular as affordable track wheels that are both light and durable.
Mold Form Forged
Advan’s top-of-the-line wheels are made using mold form forging. This technique is similar to the technique Volk Racing wheels are made by, and results in an extremely strong and lightweight wheel. The only downside is that this is an expensive and complicated process, which means these are the most expensive wheels.
Safety Certifications
Advan Racing wheels are both JWL and VIA certified, meaning they have passed impact testing, radial fatigue testing and cornering fatigue testing.

Advan Racing make a wide range of wheel options for many different vehicles. Their sizes range from 15-21” diameters, widths from 7-12”, and offsets from 12-63mm. They also offer a wide range of finishes for their wheel options.
