Stance Coilovers Review: Are They Any Good?

Stance Coilovers review thumbnail

Among the sea of coilover brands out there today, Stance is a name you will see pop up over and over again. They seem to be quite popular and are making a name for themselves.

However, are their coilovers actually any good? In this blog post, I’m going to take a deep look into the company as well as their products to find out.

NOTE: This is not to be confused with Stance+, otherwise known as “Stance Plus”, which is another company altogether.

About Stance USA

Stance USA started selling coilovers in 2005, and despite the name, have been heavily focused on motorsports and producing high performance coilovers for both street and track use.

Early on they began working with various race teams and quickly grew into a popular option for those looking for a suspension setup that was going to help them achieve faster lap times or more control over their car.

They are now actively involved with drivers and team in Time Attack, D1 Grand Prix, hill climbs, drag racing, land speed and more.

Based in the USA, they also have a Japanese division which works closely with professional drivers in Japan to help with the design and R&D of their coilovers. Their products are also extensively tested on both the road and track in the USA.

Stance USA have a team of in house engineers, the 3VS Roehrig shock dyno, a shock over-haul center and a full service fabrication shop, which, combined with road and track testing, allows them to design and test their products until they achieve the perfect setup.

About Stance Coilovers

Stance coilovers are designed for performance, being made to perform on the track while still giving you a comfortable ride on the street.

By all accounts, Stance coilovers are very high build quality, and Stance provide a lot of detail on their website about the design and parts they use, and why they chose to use what they use. Being so open and detail oriented is a good sign that they know what they are doing and not just slapping parts together and calling it a day.

All their coilovers come with 2 years warranty, and they also provide rebuilding and overhaul services for coilovers that are outside of the warranty.

From what I can find, the components for their coilovers are either made in Korea, such as the brackets, or in Japan, as is the case with seals and thrust bearings. They are then assembled at Stance USA’s facility in the USA and valved to the customer’s requirements.

Let’s take a look at some of their coilovers in detail.

Stance XR1 Coilovers

Stance XR1

The Stance XR1 coilovers are Stance’s “entry-level” coilovers and are designed with performance in mind.

These feature 1-way 16 level dampening adjustable monotube dampers with digressive valving which are inverted on MacPherson strut models. This setup gives you a high degree of responsiveness, stability and driver feel while also increasing the rigidity of the suspension with the inverted damper.

The ride height adjustment is done by the shock body, which means that suspension travel and stroke are not affected when you adjust the height. This gives you better handling and ride comfort, and means that the dampers will last longer when riding at low ride heights.

Stance will customize their coilovers to suit your requirements including custom springs and valving, as well as Swift Springs which are an optional upgrade.

These coilovers are perfect for street cars that will see a lot of track time.

All features include:

  • Ride height adjustment by the shock body
  • Inverted monotube dampers on MacPherson strut models
  • Digressive valving
  • 16 levels of dampening adjustment
  • Pillowball top mounts with camber adjustment on MacPherson strut models
  • Electrodeposition polymer coating engineered specifically for Stance USA
  • Shock bodies have additional zinc phosphate pre treatment before getting the special coating for ultimate corrosion protection – exceeded 1000+ hours of salt spray test
  • MacPherson strut use CAD designed steel lower brackets
  • Multi link suspension kits use CAD designed aluminium lower brackets for reduced weight
  • Thrust roller bearing spring seats to reduce noise and friction
  • Custom spring rates and valving available
  • Swift Spring upgrade available
  • Helper springs to increase stroke length

So, Are Stance Coilovers Any Good?

The short answer is yes. Everything I can find about Stance coilovers points to the fact that they are very high quality and offer excellent performance.

From the packaging for shipping which is done carefully with bubble wrap and separate boxes for each coilover to protect them from damage, to the build quality of the coilovers themselves that have extra thick brackets, clean welds and fit like they should, these coilovers are clearly made by people who know what they are doing.

When it comes to ride quality and performance, users report fantastic road feel, noticeable adjustments when adjusting the dampers, and a significant improvement in handling and body roll reduction.

I specifically set out to find problems or issues reported about these coilovers but I could not find anyone that had an issue.

Overall, from everything I can find, these are high quality coilovers that are perfect if you are looking for comfortable street kit that will also perform well at the track.
