Are D2 Racing Coilovers Good? Read Our 2024 Review to Find Out

D2 Racing Coilovers Review

D2 Racing is another coilover brand in the sea of companies that make coilovers at the entry-level / mid-tier range these days. They offer a wide range of coilovers for many cars as well as air bags and big brake kits.

But just how good are their products? In this post I will cover D2 Racing in detail to find out.

About D2 Racing

D2 Racing was founded in 1997 in Taiwan, with its North American division opening in 2002.

Manufacturing suspension and big brake kits, their products quickly gained popularity, particularly in Southeast Asia, where they are frequently used in motorsports to this day in series such as the Macau Grand Prix and the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. D2 also have their own race teams in Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong and China.

D2 Racing have their own manufacturing facility in Taiwan which is over 2000 square meters large (22,000 square feet), where they make and test their coilovers and other parts. They have also gained various certifications including the TUV ISO 9001:2008 and ARTC.

They currently offer a range of coilovers as well as air bag suspension and big brake kits.

Let’s take a look at their coilovers in a bit more detail.

About the D2 Racing RS Coilovers

D2 Racing’s main coilover option is the RS model. These are their “entry-level” option and are by far the most popular because they are the lowest price.

According to D2, the RS coilovers are designed as an “affordable mid-tier coilover”, which does have quite a lot of features including 36-way dampening adjustment and camber adjustable strut mounts (on applicable models).

D2 says that these coilovers are perfect for the modified street car that will see the occasional track day.

The height adjustment is done by the shock body, which gives you full suspension travel and allows you to set the spring-load. The dampers are monotube and give you 36 levels on dampening adjustment.

The shock bodies are made from 6061 aluminium and are anodized, and the mounting brackets are powder coated to prevent rusting. The springs are made from SAE9254 materials so that they are resistant to sag.

The upper strut mounts are a rubber pillow-ball combination and are camber adjustable on McPherson strut models. The idea behind this is to combine the handling of a pillow-ball top mount with the comfort of rubber mounts, according to D2. Double A-Arm suspension applications use a hardened rubber top mount.

These coilovers are rebuildable and one of the benefits of D2 Racing is that they have service centers in the USA, which makes getting your coilovers serviced or rebuilt much easier.

D2 will also custom make you a coilover kit if one doesn’t exist for your car, which is pretty cool.

Along with the RS model, D2 Racing also make motorsport and track specific coilovers including Circuit, Sport, Drag, Rally Asphalt, Drift, Rally Gravel/Snow, Super Racing, Super Sport and Pro Racing. You can find out more about these on their website.

Are the D2 Coilovers Any Good?

Yes, D2 Racing coilovers are a decent entry-level coilover that provide a good balance of ride comfort and handling performance for a relatively low price.

Like many of the entry-level coilover brands, D2 did have a shaky start, with many mixed reviews early on.

However, in the last 10 years or so, the reviews have definitely been getting more favourable, with more and more customers happy with their D2 coilovers.

The main criticism that people had was that they were too stiff. Now, even from more recent reviews, it does look like D2 coilovers are on the stiffer side, with many people reporting that the softest setting is close to factory ride, and the full stiff setting going really stiff.

This is good if you are after handling and performance, but if you are very picky about ride comfort, this may not suit you.

There are many people who use these coilovers for both street and track use and are very happy with them. I personally have a friend who has a set on his turbo BMW E30 touring and he’s very satisfied with his.

I even found one review that showed the D2 coilovers dismantled and examined internally after 8 years of track use, and they were still in good condition (and keep in mind that was an older kit from when their reviews weren’t that great).

So, overall, D2 Racing coilovers are great value for money, come with a 1 year warranty and can be serviced in the USA. They are a good purchase for those on a budget, and the RS kit is a good choice for street cars that may do occasional track days.

Some FAQ Regarding D2 Racing Coilovers

D2 Racing Coilovers VS BC Racing

A common topic that comes up with D2 Racing coilovers is should you get them or BC Racing?

The answer is that both are decent options, however, far more people use BC Racing and they have proven to be more reliable as well as better for performance. They are also more easily customizable when ordering and offer good upgrade options such as Swift Springs in custom spring rates.

While BC Racing coilovers will cost a hundred or two more than D2’s, I would personally opt for the BC Racing coilovers.

How Long Do D2 Coilovers Last?

As with any coilovers, you can expect D2 Racing coilovers to last anywhere from 20,000kms to 100,000 kms depending on how they are used, the road conditions, if they have been tracked and so on. I found a review of a set that lasted 8 years including being used on the track and they were still in good condition.

Where Are D2 Coilovers Made?

D2 Racing coilovers are made in Taiwan at D2 Racing’s manufacturing facility. They make and test all their coilover kits in-house.

How Do You Adjust D2 Coilovers?

D2 Racing coilovers adjust ride height at the shock body base, not the spring perch. To adjust ride height on D2 Racing coilovers, you need to loosen the lower locking collar at the shock body base, wind the whole coilover up or down, and then tighten the locking collar.  To adjust dampening, you need to use either the provided tool, or an Allen key, and insert it into the top of the shock shaft and turn.
