Godspeed Coilovers Review – Are They Any Good And Should You Buy Them?

Godspeed Coilovers Review

If you have been surfing the internet looking to buy coilovers online that provide both handling performance and comfort, you’ve probably come across the name Godspeed.

Godspeed make coilovers for what may seem to be to good to be true prices. The question is, however, are they actually any good?

In this blog post we will look into what the GodSpeed Project stands for and the quality of the Godspeed coilovers they manufacture. Godspeed do make a range of coilovers, but in this post we will focus on the Mono SS, the entry level ones, because they are by far the most popular, and most likely the model you are looking at if you are considering Godspeeds.

About GodSpeed Project the Company

Godspeed Project, which is owned by Fatboy Garage (and is a sister company to Rev9) was established in 2002 by a few car enthusiasts whom were not satisfied with the products available at the time from other companies.

They strived to develop affordable performance parts for car enthusiasts like themselves. Eventually they turned their hobby into a full time commitment.

The Godspeed coilovers are designed and assembled in the USA, but the parts are manufactured in Taiwan or China, depending on the model.

Let’s take a look at their most popular coilover model in detail.

Godspeed MonoSS Coilovers

These coilovers are by far Godspeed’s most popular and most affordable option. At the time of writing this post they are selling for around $675, and are designed to provide a combination of performance and price affordability.

They feature 52mm monotube damper made of “carbon seamless steel” with 16-level dampening adjustment, which Godspeed say “corresponds with daily driving scene to the Sunday track”, supposedly meaning they are good for both daily driving and the occasional track day. The springs are made from high strength SAE9252 steel.

The ride height adjustment is done by the shock body rather than the spring perches, which gives you maximum suspension travel at all ride heights and let’s you adjust spring pre-load. They typically give you 1-3 inches of lowering compared to stock.

Godspeed also says they have “Racing grade shock oil with high viscosity index”, though there’s no specifics on what that actually is. They also have a “Performance Internal Piston” with Koyo 6204z Bearing.

The Mono SS’ also come with pillow-ball strut mounts with Koyo bearing which are camber adjustment on applicable models. Some vehicles use the factory strut mount.

They come with a 1 year warranty and the dampers can be rebuilt.

Users report great quality of the coilovers themselves, and a few people have specifically mentioned how good the packaging was. Overall people seem to be happy with these coilovers, noting that they are surprisingly comfortable especially at the softer damper settings.

I have also found recurring reports of bounciness at low speeds, however it didn’t seem to be a major problem, just a point to take note of.

I have also found reports of the adjustment collars occasionally coming loose and needing retightening, as well as installation instructions which are not very good.

So those are just a few points to make note of.

These coilovers seem to be good for people looking to lower their daily driver who  might go to the occasional track day.

So, Should You Buy Godspeed Coilovers?

I’ll be honest, after doing the review on the Rev9 coilovers and finding report after report of problems, I wasn’t expecting much from the Godspeeds (since they are both owned by the same company).

However, if you are looking for budget coilovers, it looks like Godspeed MonoSS are actually a decent option. Overall people are happy with them – the quality is good, the ride is decent, they report good customer service from Godspeed and the fact that they sell replacement parts for their coilovers so if you damage something you can just buy a new part instead of a whole coilover kit.

Again, a number of reviews talked about how surprising comfortable the coilovers were, making them a good coilover option for daily driving. I also didn’t come across any reports of issues with installation or fitment problems, unlike the Rev9s.

People were also impressed with how well they were packaged, being double boxed and wrapped in heavy plastic with corrugated cardboard between each piece. This made sure that the coilovers arrived in perfect condition and that there were no chips or scrapes. Again, unlike the Rev9s.

There were a few reports of people saying that ride quality and durability was lacking and that the shocks blew after less than 20,000kms, and that they are bouncy at low speeds.

So, just keep in mind that you are buying cheap coilovers and be realistic with what you expect. However, for the price, it looks like they will get the job done and you’ll be able to lower your car on a budget and enjoy at least a fairly comfortable ride.

If you are considering these vs Rev9s, I would definitely go with these.

Do Godspeed Coilovers Come Preloaded?

No, Godspeed coilovers DO NOT come preloaded from the factory (as stated on their website).

How Long Do Godspeed Coilovers Last?

Realistically, they will probably last you on the lower end, with some users reporting that the shocks blew out in less than 20,000kms. So don’t expect them to last too long.

How Much Do Godspeed Coilovers Lower Your Car?

Typically, the Godspeed MonoSS coilovers will lower your car from 1-3 inches lower than factory (dependent on the vehicle).

Are Godspeed Coilovers Adjustable?

Yes, all Godspeed coilovers are both ride height and dampening adjustable.

How Do You Lower Godspeed Coilovers?

Ride height on Godspeed coilovers is lowered or raised at the shock body, not the spring. To lower the Godspeed coilovers, you need to loosen the locking collar at the bottom of the threaded shock body, wind the shock body down (or up if raising) and then tighten the locking collar.

Are Godspeed Coilovers Rebuildable?

Yes, Godspeed coilovers are rebuildable and Godspeed will sell you all the parts you need to have them rebuilt. They will also sell you replacement parts such as shock bases, in case of damage.
