Maxpeedingrods Coilovers Review: Are They Really Any Good?

If you have been looking into budget coilovers you’ve no doubt come across the name Maxpeedingrods.

When it comes to price, Maxpeedingrods have pretty much everyone beat, with coilovers so cheap they are cheaper than most lowering springs.

Naturally, this seems ridiculous, but at the same time makes you wonder if they are for real, and just how good they can possibly be.

In this post I’m going to look into Maxpeeding rods and their coilovers in details, and find out just how good they really are.

About Maxpeedingrods

Maxpeeding rods in a Chinese company that was established in 2006. They specialise in making a wide range of performance parts for laughably low prices including turbos, coilovers, air bag kits, connecting rods and even other parts such as inverter generators and air heaters for motorhomes.

Despite the fact of getting a bit of a reputation of cheap ebay junk, they continued to press on and make their parts, and slowly but surely more and more people began using them.

How can you say no to a $150 turbo even if you know it’s going to suck, just to see how long it lasts?

Well, many people decided to try their parts, and the next thing you know they have over 4 million customers worldwide.

Now they have over 30 warehouses worldwide which allow them to ship their parts very quickly, no matter where you are, as well as an 861,000 square foot manufacturing facility with 15 high-tech production lines where they make their parts.

Maxpeedingrods are also actively involved in the car community, sponsoring racing drivers from all over the world as well being involved in other events like car shows.

They are also now TUV certified, achieving a TÜV ISO9001-2015 certification for design and manufacturing of shock absorbers, connecting rods, chassis hardware for automobiles.

About the Maxpeedingrods Coilovers

Maxpeedingrods initially had one coilover offering which was well known for its yellow color and ridiculously low price of around $250, which is even cheaper than the notoriously cheap Raceland coilovers.

They still sell this kit, which you can get for around $300 (and in various colors), and they have since expanded their range to offer a height and dampening adjustable model, as well as a lightly upper class T6 model, which is meant to offer more performance without sacrificing ride comfort.

These coilovers come complete with springs, dampers, aluminium upper strut mounts (with camber adjustment on some models), dust covers, bump stops and more.

The ride height could be adjusted from 1-3 inches lower than factory and is done by the shock body, which lets you set the spring loads and allows you to retain full suspension travel at all ride heights.

The dampers are twin-tube, and on the adjustable models feature 24-level dampening adjustment.

What’s even more amazing is that Maxpeedingrods actually gives you a 1 year warranty with their coilovers (I can see why people decide to buy them!)

Just How Good Are Maxpeedingrods Coilovers Really?

Well, let’s be honest. You can only expect so much for the price, and there gets a point where no matter what you do, something is going to have to give in order to make things that cheap.

However, taking the price (and the warranty) into consideration, the Maxpeedingrods coilovers are surprisingly good.

Build Quality

While they certainly don’t feature the build quality of a company like Ohlins, there are surprisingly few reports of these coilovers actually breaking in any serious way.

Quite frankly, at this price level, I would be expecting lower mounts to be breaking off or something, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue here.

Sure, there are areas that are not great, such as fairly thin metal being used on the mounting brackets (not that I’ve seen any that broke), reports of rusting on the adjustment threads, and dampers failing and leaking (sometimes leaking in the actual box right from factory).

But you have to be realistic when you take the price into consideration, and the fact that these coilovers seem to last a majority of people even a year is amazing.

Maxpeedingrods also offer good customer service and seem to have a good reputation dealing with any problems, so if you do get a faulty set, they will probably look after you.

Ride Quality

The ride quality on these is reported to be noticeably stiff, but not unbearable.

Realistically, these are not going to be fine tuned for the car, so the fact that they are remotely decent is again, pretty amazing considering the astronomically low price.

If you are looking at these, be prepared to lose quite a bit of ride comfort. But if that doesn’t bother you and you just want to lower the car, these will get the job done.

Customer Service

Maxpeedingrods have a good reputation when it comes to customer service. You can buy your parts from their website directly, and they ship fast and worldwide.

It’s also not difficult to contact them through the website, and the reports I’ve seen mentioning coilover issues were resolved by Maxpeedingrods, normally sending out replacement parts.

As I mentioned previously, they offer a 1 year warranty on their coilover kits, so at the very least you should get 1 year out of your kit.

Potential Issues

Being so cheap, there is no way that these coilovers are not made with at least somewhat inferior materials than more expensive brands, so you have to be prepared for that.

However, I have not come across many reports of any serious issues such as coilovers mounts breaking off or anything like that.

The most common problems I see with these coilovers are:

Dampers leaking – It’s anyone’s guess as to how long they will last. Some make it 6 months, some a couple of years. Some are leaking right from the factory when you open the box. So take that into consideration when buying these
The adjustment threads rust – If you live in an area with harsh winters and salty roads, I wouldn’t recommend these as the odds of them rusting and seizing up are high
Fitment issues – While I didn’t find any instances of major fitment issues, you may find that things like brackets don’t line up, or the strut mounts are not perfect and you don’t get full camber adjustment etc
Noises – These coilovers are known for making squeaking, popping and groaning noises.

Should You Buy Maxpeedingrods Coilovers?

Honestly, if you are on a tight budget and just want to lower your car and you are ready to sacrifice some ride comfort, or perhaps it’s your first coilover kit and you just want to learn, these coilovers will get the job done.

If you are planning on using these on the track, or want to get some performance benefits for your car, I would recommend looking into other coilover brands who have a better reputation for track use.

Overall, just remember to be realistic with what you are buying. There’s a reason cheap parts are cheap, and you’re not going to get the quality of a more expensive coilover kit from a reputable brand.

If you are looking to get cheap coilovers that will be a bit better than the Maxpeeding Rods set, here are a couple of options I would recommend.

Tein Flex Z

As far as “cheap” coilovers go, TEIN Flex Z’s are about as good as it’s going to get.

These coilovers are only a few hundred more than the Maxpeedingrods but have an excellent reputation and are a very high quality kit.

TEIN coilovers are well known for being high quality products, and in the case of the Flex Z’s, are made at their facility on Yokohama, Japan.

These coilovers come with a range of features, including:

Ride height adjustment by the shock body, goes up to 5 inches lower depending on the model
16-step adjustable twin tube dampers tuned for street comfort
Damper oil designed to withstand intensive driving and extreme temperatures, making them good for occasional track use
The damper inserts are replaceable (and can be custom valved) so you don’t have to replace the whole set when one blows
Highly resistant to corrosion, with TEIN’s special coatings
TEIN no sag springs
Camber adjustable top mounts (on applicable models)
1 year warranty

For only a couple hundred dollars more, you will be getting a significantly better coilover kit that has proven to be a good choice and will perform well both on the street and track. If you ask me, you should definitely go for the TEIN’s.

Godspeed MonoSS

If for some reason you don’t want to get the TEIN’s, the Godspeed MonoSS coilovers are another good option at a very low price.

These offer surprisingly decent ride quality for the price as well as an impressive list of features. From all the budget coilovers in this price range, these have the best reputation from what I have found, and are the go-to budget coilover.

Features include:

Ride height adjustment by the shock body
Lowers 1-3 inches
Monotube dampers
16 level dampening adjustment
“Performance” internal piston with “race” shock oil
Aluminium top mounts
Anodized shock body
1 year warranty

If you are looking for a budget coilover for your street car, these are going to get the job done fairly well.

If you have a bit more money to spending, the BC Racing BR Series coilovers are another very good option.

These coilovers are made for almost every vehicle on the road and they offer a large amount of customizability so that you get exactly what you are looking for.
