Selecting the Right Rims For Your 350Z

Orange Nissan 350Z with gunmetal centered wheels

In order to select wheels that are both going to fit and give you the look you are after, there are a couple of important factors you need to know. In this section I am going to explain what you need to look for in order to select the right wheels for your car.

Stud Pattern & Center Bore

One of the most important things to get right when selecting wheels is the stud pattern and center bore. On the 350Z, the stud pattern is 5×114.3, which just so happens to be the most popular stud pattern for aftermarket wheels, giving 350Z a vast range of wheel choices.

The centerbore on the 350Z is 66.1mm. When selecting wheels, you need to make sure that the centerbore is at least that size. Most aftermarket wheels will have centerbores larger than this, in order to fit a wide range of cars.

If the centerbore on the wheels you are looking at is larger, you’ll want to buy a set of hub centric rings that match your car’s center bore to prevent any wheel vibrations. The outer diameter of the hub centric ring  needs to match the wheel’s centerbore, and the inner diameter needs to match the car’s centerbore – in the case of the 350Z it’s 66.1mm.

Practically all shops that sell wheels will have hub centric rings as well.

Wheel Diameter

The stock wheels on the 350Z are 17” on the base model and 18” on the Touring and Track editions.

350Z’s will generally fit wheels from 17-20” in diameter without problems. Beyond that, you may need to make modifications to fit them.

On the 350Z, 18-19” in the sweet spot for wheel size, as most aftermarket wheels that fit are made in these sizes, they give you a lot of tyre options and they aren’t too heavy.

Any larger and you’ll need to run super thin tyres and the wheels will be heavy, giving you a worse ride and worse performance.

Wheel Width

The width of the wheel will dictate the tyre size you can run, and will also play a big part in how the wheels fit on the car.

350Zs can fit up to 9.5” wide wheels on the front and 10.5” wide on the rear without having to make any modifications or roll the fenders. However, this does depend on the offset of the wheels (covered next).

If you are willing to roll the fenders, you’ll be able to fit 11” wide and even wider if you want to run stretched tyres. If you are planning to do a widebody kit, then there’s practically no limit on how wide you can go, but you will have to work that out since there are a lot of variables at play.

Offset

The wheel offset is going to dictate which wheels will fit and which won’t. A 9” wide wheel with a low enough offset won’t fit and will hit the body, but on the other hand an 11” wide wheel with the right offset will fit your 350z no problem.

Generally speaking, for wider wheels from 9-11”s, an offset between 10-20 is usually the way to go. But this will depend on the exact width, so make sure you double check the specs of the wheels you are looking at.

For a wheel fitment where the wheels sit flush with the guards, you will want to go with 9.5” wide on the front, 10.5” wide on the rear with an offset of ET20.

If you want to compare different wheel fitments, there are so many modified 350Zs around that you will be able to find pictures of practically every wheel size online to see how they fit.

Tyre Size

Tyre size is another important aspect to consider when selecting your wheels.

Firstly, you’ll want to make sure that the tyre size you plan to run is actually available and is a reasonable cost.

Some tyre sizes are hard to find and can cost significantly more than other sizes that are close, so check this before committing.

Also deciding on whether you want to run a square sidewall or whether you want to stretch the tyres a bit will affect how wide you can go with the wheels.

For performance reasons, a square sidewall or a tiny amount of stretch is generally best.

If you are only concerned about looks and just want to run wide wheels, stretching tyres can allow you to fit wheels you would otherwise not get under the fenders with a square tyre.

So make sure you plan your tyre sizes along with the wheels, as they are just as important to make sure you get a setup that fits how you want it to.

Ride Height

Your ride height is also going to affect how wide you can go with your wheels are tyres.

If your car is stock height or only slightly lower, you are going to have more room to run wider wheels and tyres than if the car is slammed.

It’s generally a good idea to get the ride height sorted first, that way you know what you are working with when selecting wheel and tyre sizes.

Clearing Brakes

Another thing you need to make sure of is that the wheels will clear the brake calipers. The 350Z has relatively large calipers, especially the Track editions with the factory Brembos, so you want to make sure that your wheel design and offset is going to clear the brakes.

If you do happen to order wheels that hit the caliper, you can solve that by installing wheel spacers. Just keep in mind that wheel spacers will push the wheels outwards, and you might end up having clearance issues with the fenders.

A safe way to tell if the wheels are going to work or not is to simply see if other people have installed them on their 350Zs. If they have, then you should be good to go.
