Yonaka Coilovers Review – Read This Before You Buy

Yonaka Coilovers Review thumnail

In this post we are going to look at a lesser known coilover brand – Yonaka.

Yonaka makes some very cheap coilovers, with some models starting as low as $479. While this can be tempting for people who are building a car on a budget, the question is: how good can they really be for that price?

Let’s take a look at Yonaka in detail and the coilovers they make, and see how good they really are.

Who Are Yonaka Motorsports?

Yonaka Motorsports have been around since 2001 and started off specializing in Honda/Acura performance parts. Since then, they have branched out to making parts for a range of other brands as well.

They make a wide range of performance parts from coilovers to clutch kits, exhausts, intercoolers, engine mounts and more. They are most known for their exhaust systems.

Aside from that information, little else is revealed about who exactly they are, where they are based or where their parts are made. However, I did find mention on a forum that they are based in Canada.

What Are The Yonaka Coilovers Like?

Yonaka Coilovers

Currently they offer 2 coilover models, the Spec 1 and Spec 2. The Spec 1 is only height adjustable, while the Spec 2 STREET has 28-level dampening adjustment. There is also a “RACE” version of the Spec 2 with fixed dampening (not adjustable) which are not recommended for street use (assumable too stiff).

These coilovers are designed primarily as a street coilover, however the Spec 2s are sold as “good for the track”, with the RACE kit obviously designed for track use.

The STREET versions feature 1-4 inches of lowering by the shock body, and the RACE versions use the same system, but will only lower up to 2 inches.

They do come as a complete kit with strut mounts so you can swap them right in without having to disassemble your old suspension or get new OEM strut mounts. They are not camber adjustable, however.

They also come with a 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects.

So, Are The Yonaka Coilovers Any Good?

I scoured the internet to find reviews on these coilovers, and most of the reviews you’ll find on forums and the like are all from around 2010, which is 12 years ago now.

I did find some more recent videos on Youtube reviewing these coilovers. Overall, the reviews are mixed.

Positive Points

I did find a good number of positive reviews, which state:

  • The ride is decent and fairly comfortable on the street
  • They do reduce body roll (though that’s a given with stiffer suspension)
  • They go pretty low (up to 4 inches)
  • They can handle track use

Negative Points

I also found reviews that had issues with the coilovers, including:

  • Some say the ride is too stiff, some say it is fairly soft, indicating a lack of proper tuning for each model (which is not surprising at such a low price point)
  • The shock bodies/mounts being too long or short, resulting in wack ride heights that could not be fixed through adjusting, due to maxing it out and still not being right
  • Yonaka’s customer service also seems to be hit or miss.

Also, while this was not part of the reviews, I mentioned in the into that it’s difficult to find any information about the company or the coilovers, such as where they are made, what materials they use and so on. To me, that’s not a good sign, especially when there are many other companies who do offer that information about their products.

Conclusion – Should You Buy Yonaka Coilovers?

Personally, I can’t recommend them. After doing the research, there is just nothing that makes me want to go with this coilover kit over some of the others at the same price range that are doing a much better job of making a name for themselves.

I also don’t like the lack of information to be found about Yonaka and their parts, and I find it very surprising that they have been around over 20 years and they are still relatively unheard of and no one knows anything about them.

Also, Yonaka uses a “questionable” marketing tactic of putting high prices on their website and then saying they are having a “sale”, which is the true price of the product. Not sure why they think they need to do that – all the other coilover companies don’t.

So, overall, while you may end up with a decent set, and they will probably get the job done for street driving, it’s just a risk you don’t need to take when you can get other brands for the same sort of price and know that you are going to get a decent product.

If you really want to go with Yonaka’s, you can get them for the best price I could find here:
