When selecting coilovers, there are a few main considerations you’ll need to make in order to get the right kit to suit your needs.
Budget
Budget is the primary thing that’s going to dictate your choice in coilover.
The thing to know is that as coilovers get cheaper, they tend to get worse in both performance and ride comfort. Now, there are certainly decent kits in the budget range, and I will cover those here, but none of them are going to be as good as a $2000+ coilover kit no matter what you do.
For street cars, often a cheaper coilover kit that gives a decent ride is going to be more than enough for 99% of people.
But if you are planning to spend significant time at the track, you are going to find that basically no budget coilover kit is going to give you good enough performance, and they probably won’t last too long either.
So you need to be realistic with what you can afford, and what you will get for the money. It may pay off to delay the purchase until you have enough money to get a kit that is going to do what you need it to do.
What You Will Use the Car For
The other main factor to consider is what you will be using the car for.
If you are buying coilovers for your daily driver that won’t be used on the track or might see 1-2 track days a year, it doesn’t really make sense to get a track specific kit that is going to give you amazing handling but will be uncomfortable on the street where you will use it most.
On the other hand, if you are building a track car, or even a street car that will be doing regular track days, you will probably want a kit that has been built to handle the extra stress and wear of track use, as well as the adjustability to tune the setup and provide the extra bit of handling performance you’ll want.
Different forms of motorsport also require different setups, and a grip car is going to have different requirements to a drift or drag car, so this is also something to consider. If you planning on doing all of these, then going for a decent all round setup would be your best choice, especially one that you can upgrade later if you decent to focus on one type of racing.
